I just took this photo the other day in a little shop in Astoria, Queens called Dave & Tony’s Salumeria.
Think that it can be used as an alternative for chocolate!

They are dried carob bean (also called St. John’s bread).

I was surprised to see this foto and it brought back some memories. When I lived in Italy, the carob was a special treat to me as a child. It was especially during Christmas time since it was given as sweets to the children. I will go and get some and see if my grandchildren would like it. Thanks Lidia.
