Thanksgiving with an Italian Flair!

I love the Holidays, and I especially love Thanksgiving. Although traditionally an American holiday, I always give our Thanksgiving meal an Italian flair. For those families who would like to integrate something different into their favorite holiday meal, here are 3 tips and tricks that will hopefully spice up your Thanksgiving into something new and exciting!

First I suggest turning pan sauce into turkey gravy without using flour or starch. Put the strained and reduced sauce in a pan, or skillet, set over medium heat, and whisk in fine dry bread crumbs (about 1 teaspoon for each cup of sauce). You’ll have a delicious and natural-tasting gravy in no time!

In my family, strudel desserts, both making and eating them, are an Istrian tradition. This particular tradition of strudel, stretches well beyond Istria, and is alive and well from Friuli- Venezia Giulia into the Trentino-Alto Adige regions of Italy. My Autumn Strudel with Squash and Cranberries, from Lidia’s Family Table, is an unusual one of sweetened winter squash and tart cranberries. Any kind of hard squash with a golden flesh will be delicious here.






If you are looking for other suggestions on giving your Thanksgiving “table” the Italian flair, here are a few more ideas that I always like to have on my table. I think you can begin by putting out a great antipasto spread like prosciutto di Parma, Grana Padano with a drizzle of balsamico tradizionale, some mozzarella di buffalo with roasted peppers, and some cured olives and great Italian bread. Instead of a lasagna try making some tortellini in brodo, a good chicken stock with some tortellini (store bought tortellini will be fine). A perfect side to go along with your turkey would be some Italian vegetables, like escarole garlic and oil or broccoli rabe, and of course a good Italian wine.
